He is a member of the Society of American Magicians, the International
Brotherhood of Magicians, the Magic Collectors' Association, the New
England Magic Collectors Association, and the Shadow Network.

In his spare time he does free lance illustration work, chiefly for the magic world, and he occasionally performs a comedy magic act under the professional name of Alan the Uncanny. (Other performing personae are currently in development, one of which is particularly "bizarre.") His interests within magic are eclectic. Other activities over the years have included cartoon animation, portrait and documentary photography, comedy writing, and musical theater. His general interests also include history, mythology, psychology, anthropology, and popular culture in all its forms. Ghost stories and tales of supernatural terror are a particular fascination.

Since November of 1983 his comic strip Basil the Baffling & Chloe has
appeared in MUM, the official magazine of the Society of American
Magicians. He has also contributed original magic ideas to many of the
magic magazines and articles to The Yankee Magic Collector.

Alan's interest in Bizarre and storytelling magic (he categorizes them as two separate tools of the conjurer: one of style, and the other of structure) stems from his dedication to performance magic as a form of
theater rather than as just a demonstration of effects. He was introduced to existence of the current Bizarre magic phenomenon by reading about Tony Andruzzi and his Invocation events in Chicago. Later, he acquired Andruzzi's booklet "Daemon's Diary" and several back issues of The New Invocation.. He subscribed to "The Altar Flame" during the last two years or so of its existence.

He noticed both the potential and the limitations of the original dark
concept of "Goetic" or "Bizarre" Magick, but was encouraged to pursue certain avenues of thought as that concept was expanded upon by such innovators as Eugene Burger, Robert E. Neale, and Brother Shadow, as well as the myth-oriented themes of Jeff McBride. The analyses and contributions of Larry White were also helpful.

In 1989, Alan conjured up the character Professor Mordecai Macabre, an ages-old authority on Arcane Arts and Occult Phenomenon, to host a
special Halloween presentation for one of his a local magic clubs. After
spending many years away from our dimensional plane (perhaps lying in a state of suspended animation but more likely on sabbatical and
traversing diverse Mystical Worlds to gain knowledge thereof), Prof. Macabre has emerged from the Mists of Oblivion and begun making appearances as "a Guide to the Unknown that lies both Without and Within."
