Effect:- A spectator from the audience is asked to choose one of three paperback novels and when he has one, is asked to check the total number of pages in it. As an example, let's say there are 373 pages in it. A pad of paper is then handed out to another spectator who is asked to write any number between 1 and 373 at the top of the page, then pass the pad to any other spectator in the room, who is asked to do the same thing, writing his number below the first; this is repeated until four different numbers are written on the pad. The pad is closed and passed back to the spectator holding the chosen book. He is asked to think of any one of the four numbers written on the pad and open the book at that page, reading the first five or six words of the top line to himself. The spectator is asked to think of the overall image that the line he has read gives him. Here is an example of what could come next. The performer furrows his brow and says "I get the impression of warmth.....No! More than warmth...I get the feeling of heat...was it something to do with FIRE? The spectator then reads aloud the line in the book that he had been thinking of:- "The light caught the red fire in her hair..."! After his well deserved applause, the performer draws attention back to his prediction. "So the general image you projected to me was of fire" he says; the spectator agrees. "Let us see what my prediction reveals". As the performer reaches for the prediction, the folded paper bursts into flames! "Indeed, fire is a powerful image!" This effect is simplicity itself to perform and you get everything you need to work this right away except for the flash paper.
